Do you have an IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit)? Do you know how to use it? A person experiencing major blood loss from a gun shot wound has approximately three (3) minutes to live. Don't be helpless - learn techniques anyone can use to try and to buy the precious time needed until EMS arrives. NO PRIOR FIRST AID OR MEDICAL TRAINING REQUIRED! What is it? Stop the Bleed’s purpose is “to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made or natural disasters.” (bleedingcontrol.org) In this education session, non-medical bystanders learn three ways to effectively stop life threatening bleeding and save lives: holding pressure, packing a wound, and applying a tourniquet. How Do These Bleeding Injuries Occur? People suffer life threatening bleeding injuries every day, in a multitude of ways:
Why Do I Need This Training? Uncontrolled bleeding is the #1 cause of preventable death from trauma – the more people who know how to control bleeding in an injured patient, the greater the chances of surviving that injury. A person can die from blood loss within five minutes, so immediate action to stop life threatening bleeding is critical. Research has shown that bystanders, with little or no medical training, can become heroic life-savers… bystanders will always be the first to the scene, no matter how fast the professional emergency responders arrive. What Should I Expect? Stop the Bleed is a one hour presentation, followed by a 30 minute hands-on skill station. Some of the images that depict life threatening bleeding may be difficult to view– that’s ok! If you are uncomfortable and need to leave the room, please do so! During the skills stations, you will be asked to demonstrate holding pressure, packing a wound, and applying a tourniquet on a “trainer leg”. NO COST TO ATTEND!
